Boerboel Health
When buying a South African Boerboel you must be careful where you buy your pup from and to check the background breeding of the parents. You should adhere to the following;
Both parents should be hip scored with a score lower then 18, the lower the score the better. Topguard would class 18 on the border line. Topguard Boerboels aim to breed around 10 in all Topguard dogs. |
| |
Topguard Boerboels would not recommend buying a dog from parents who both have score around the
18 mark! We would make sure the one parent was scoring between the 10-13 score. |
| |
The scoring system We are referring to is the BVA, meaning the lower the score the better the hips and higher score the worse. The score is a combined result of each hip joint being evaluated separately then added
together for the final score. |
| |
In a ideal world you would want the same score in each joint making the dog perfectly balance. I.e. Tia has a score of 6 on each joint making her final score a 12, a very respectable score. |
All other health issues to look at are elbows problems and hydroplaser so be sure to check the parents are free of these also.
